I've recently fixed a hacked website of one of my customer. The website was running an old version of Joomla CMS. I was not in charge of the website maintenance and for security reasons I would not mention the name of the site in this post.
The hacker, from Russia could attack the website through any security breaches of the non-updated CMS. We were able to put the site back and running thanks to a backup run by my customer some time ago. However changes on the website content since this last backup were lost.
If you have a web maintenance plan with Begin with B Inc and asked for a proactive maintenance, the update is done on a regular basis. If you don't have a maintenance plan, and even if Begin with B Inc host your website, I do not run CMS update automatically unless you ask for it. It is then very important for the safety of your data and the integrity of your website to ask for regular CMS update or to run them yourself if you know how to do it. If you don't however, do not upgrade your site yourself. It might look easy but you can completely break it down in some cases.
As for pricing, count around 1/2 an hour every two month for a secure yet not too expensive maintenance.
I want to add that even with the very last version of a CMS, your website cannot be 100% safe. Some hackers can get through CIA servers so, risks are still out there!
We recently implemented a new option in the payment process for people who wants to register at Seminarsforhealth.ca courses. Only "cheque or Paypal" payment were allowed so far. After few tweaks of the Joomla Event Booking component and the database, registrant can now select "Interac" payment as well in the process.
